For her own good

Discovery:
Farley is not amused with her new (very cute) earplugs.

Verdict:
She wears them anyways. Not that she couldn't get used to pistol fire
noise, but (just like my mother always said) she only gets one set of
ear drums and when she's 20 and we are still hitting the trails, she
needs to be able to hear the bear so that she can take care of us
both.

Sorry Farley. Mother knows best. I'll make you a deal - anytime you
wear plugs, I will too. Look at the bright side, I don't make you
wear a helmet!

Anyone else have horses that wears earplugs? I'm using the soft
squishy foam balls. I wanted the ones that look like stoppers, but
they didn't have the right size. Do they eventually stop shaking their
heads and walking around like sullen, drowned rats with their noses
poked out and their ears folded back?

  1. LOL! I love the description of Farley w/ Ear plugs!

I've never tried anything like that, I guess I'd never considered whether they even made a product like ear plugs for horses, but I thin it's a good idea in the scenario you describe. Hope it goes well!

  2. We always used the fluffy ones when doing show clipping. Either that or a wadded up piece of cotton roll. All of the horses got used to them quickly. Maybe try letting her wear them while doing familiar things so she learns that she can still hear.

  3. hahaha...poor farley. you'd better wear the plugs too...you wouldn't want her to feel like you lied to her (and when you're riding the trails in 20 years, you'll want to be able to hear that mountain lion leaping down from the cliff on top of you as well)

  4. Y'know I have considered those for JB with his fear of anything sounding like a dirt bike.... but then I thought it might make it worse if he can't hear them but they suddenly come into view. .. Poor Farley.. I think she's just embarassed!

  5. Perhaps the ones you have are pretty noticeable to her. Start with something soft and disposable and that she can still hear through somewhat and put them on her randomly. Work her up to the ones you paid money for.
